Thunder and lightning yesterday; rain and significantly lower temperatures today. Already!
This is the time of year when I always think of that beautiful old song by Indigo Girls: 'Summer's beginning to give up her fight' that I used to listen to during my college years.
Nostalgia and longing (for me at least) as my favorite time of year draws to a close but also a time of anticipation because it is the season of the golden light of late September and October afternoons that makes this time of year quite glorious.
After harvesting the grains at Lughnasadh, we are now harvesting the fruits and getting ready for the long winter rest, reflecting on the abundance we reaped this summer and throughout the light season since Imbolc and Ostara.
What have you reaped? What are the benefits of this year? Do you feel abundant? Have you prospered and thrived? In what way?
Let's turn now toward the spirit of Mabon and ask the Tarot what's in store for this season. What are the prevailing energies for us this Mabon and the six upcoming weeks?
1) TEN OF SWORDS REVERSED
The Ten of Swords upright is a card of utter surrender and possibly even utter failure (utter betrayal?) where we have to give up, let go and admit defeat.
Here, it is reversed. What does it mean? As I see it, it shows us that all inner possibilities have been explored and exhausted and now is the time - very fittingly for Mabon - for inner liberation and change. It is a godsend (or a goddess-send) since, even though letting go can be challenging at times, with the Ten of Swords, the energy is always right, ripe and mature: yes, it is the perfect time to move on and anticipate what comes next with an open heart and an open mind while maintaining a 'no regrets' attitude.
What keeps us bound is more often than not our inner aspects, even when we think it is some outer situation. So go deep within and identify what may be stopping you from total surrender and liberation if that is the case. Find it and deal with it compassionately and lovingly in order to resolve it. The energies are supporting you.
2) ACE OF CUPS REVERSED
Two reversed cards for this reading! Cups relate to feelings and emotions and the Ace of Cups is a new potential for love. Here, being reversed, it points toward the inner world, meaning the new potential for self-love.
There is a correlation between the first and the second card: the liberation brought about by the Ten of Swords leads to a higher level of self-love, self-compassion, self-empowerment, and self-respect.
It is often the greatest moments of vulnerability that trigger the greatest opportunities for new growth, new power, new strength, new hope, new optimism. When a vulnerable aspect is looked at kindly and gently, as was done with the Ten of Swords reversed, renewed self-esteem, self-belief, self-confidence and sense of capability arise.
3) SUMMARY
What we thought was a weakness, a defect, a loss, a deficiency within ourselves or our lives is in fact a lever to propel us toward more spiritual advancement and self-appreciation: 'Wow! I can actually do that and deal with that without feeling overwhelmed or sad or wronged or hurt!'
It is an epiphany that brings great satisfaction and that satisfaction brings liberation, joy, and peace.
There really is a sense of accomplishment and achievement in this reading. It is the finish line of a journey that, for me personally, started at Mabon last year.
I hope you are also experiencing and feeling a sense of triumph, reaching a resolution and deep, long sought-after healing. A dragging, demanding battle is over. This reading heralds a time of enjoyment when we can cherish an empty mind and focus on the golden colors outside, slowing down along with Mother Nature, easing into the short cosy days of the dark season.
4) WOLF
The keywords for Wolf are Intuition, Learning and The Shadow. Use your intuition to figure out what aspect you need to release. Bathe in the gifts of a learning attitude to progress ahead on your path to wisdom and enlightenment. Do not fear The Shadow as it is your yin side, your Feminine side, and your divinity. Whatever you love unconditionally is healed and then brings its gifts of light, mastery and illumination.
Wolf is a wonderful spiritual companion to help us with that as she will give us inner strength during this time of renewal and crossing beyond our known and familiar territories, when a new compass is taking shape within.
5) YARROW
Yarrow brings the energies of Fidelity, Masculinity, and Virility. That would be a little hard for any woman to identify with Masculinity and even more with Virility...and yet...isn't there an energy of masculinity and virility in letting go and 'not caring' so much about that aspect we are releasing?
Interestingly, Yarrow also brings the energy of Fidelity so there may be a hint here at how to practice fidelity in a masculine way. Maybe it shows us what we need to let go of or rewrite or recreate or reform or rethink or reconsider and adapt so that it fits us and makes us feel better.
What do we need to be faithful to? Or to whom? Maybe ourselves and our feelings, our power, our way to love, ourselves and others, our goals, our boundaries, and our values. The Ace of Cups reversed was a reminder that we are our priority at the moment, that we need to respect ourselves...and therefore vow fidelity and commit to ourselves.
6) HAPPY MABON!
Coming full circle. Let go of summer and embrace autumn. Thank life for being good even if it doesn't look exactly like what you may have desired. You always have what you are and that is good. Time to feel gratitude: harvests, healings, and blessings were many this year.
